JOB FAIR TIPS
Why register for a Job Fair?
When you register for a job fair you are providing important information which includes your employment interests and other data which may be utilized to provide employers background on candidates for jobs. By providing your email address it allows us to communicate updates regarding the job fair or available job opportunities. Although not required, registration is strongly recommended for the reasons mentioned above.
Are there any fees to attend the job fair?
No. Our job fairs are free admission. There is no cost to for any of the job seeker services offered at the job fair. Depending on the venue, job seekers may be required to pay for parking which is not established by Kellen Resources but by the venue. We select venues that have no cost or low cost parking fees.
Come Prepared
Approach a job fair as you would an interview. Always dress professionally, bring several copies of your resume and make sure you have a pen to complete an employment application. Be prepared when talking to employers to express your career interests and the value you will add to their organization. You can say something like “I am very interested in working with your organization. I have 3 years experience in retail and can bring value to your company through my previous experience in customer service and business to business sales. I am focusing my search on a position in retail and would like an opportunity to interview to discuss my background in detail”.
Face to face meetings with employers are your opportunity to express your value to recruiters and explore opportunities you may not have previously considered. With this in mind, bring a positive attitude. Your attitude is everything. If you approach a job fair or job opportunities as “there is nothing here for me” then you are missing out on potential employment options. Recruiters can tell when job seekers are just “browsing” and not really serious or interested in their company.
What to Expect
At every job fair, regardless of size or location, you can expect to find various companies with immediate hiring needs requiring entry to experienced professional level. Employers dedicate their time by attending the job fair to find talent by talking to job seekers assessing their career interests, experience, skill level, personal characteristics and other factors to make a successful hire. Don’t always expect to find employers who have job opportunities in your field or career of interest. In today’s economy with scarce jobs and thousands of people applying for the same position, your objective is to find employment, even if it’s outside your field of study or long term goal.
Employers will have job descriptions, company materials and other handouts to educate you about their current openings. An employer may hand you an application for employment to apply for their positions while at the job fair. Others may direct you to go online to apply for positions.
Attending job fairs are isa good use of your time to find out about job opproutnites, speak directly to recuriters and gain other valuable information from employers that you otherwise wouldn’t receive by not attending the job fair. Whether you stand in long or short lines to talk to an employer, you have made an investment to attend the job fair so utilize your time well.
You may meet with representatives from companies who are not hiring but offer valuable information for people considering going to a trade school to learn new skills, or joining the Army or National Guard. Other organization is present to offer employment and job resource information. Every company present has an interest and benefit for someone, even if it may not be for you.
Talk to Every Employer
Your objective at a job fair is to meet directly with companies who have job opportunities. Every employer has a potential job opportunity.
Take the time to talk to every employer at the job fair. It is a mistake to pre judge or assume that an employer you may brush by or not interested in doesn’t have an opportunity for you. You many not find your dream job or what you went to school for but your goal right now is employment. Once employed, you can still pursue your career, but more comfortably with employment.
Consider a financial or insurance company that isn't hiring job seekers for finance or sales positions. They may have opportunities in human resources, administration, marketing or other opportunities that may interest you. Many job seekers have found employment with an employer they never would have considered had they not taken the time to investigate about their employment opportunities.
Keep your options open. We have known many job seekers who surprisingly found alternate careers by going into a different field of interest. The more selective or picky you become the longer it may take for you to find employment and with plenty of job seekers in the job market employers don’t have to wait for you. They will find plenty of job seekers looking for employment outside of their career interests.
What Are Employers Looking For?
Employers are looking for professionalism, enthusiasm, good tenure, a polished image and job seekers who show a strong interest in their company. Equally important, recruiters are looking for candidates that relevant job experience or transferable skills or industry experience for their job openings. For example a telemarketer may not be qualified for an accounting position, but has transferable skills to apply for a job in customer service.
We have talked to many employers who regardless of the candidates strengths, they did not consider them for the job because of how they were dressed.
.
erious job seekers dress in professional attire as they would if they were going to an interview. Never underestimate the importance of your attire. Wear a suit, dress, pant suit or slacks and blouse with proper dress shoes. Employers generally do not hire job seekers to work in a professional atmosphere who show up in jeans, tennis shoes or with a disheveled appearance. In the job market you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.
